This entry is part 5 of 12 in the series Getting Outta Dodge

We love our country, but it’s time to think about the unthinkable. In the last world war, the European Jews who survived were the ones who read the writing on the wall and got out. We may have to leave. It’s the ultimate bug out, the one you won’t read about on the survival blogs.

The first thing totalitarian states do is make it harder to leave. The US has already taken beginning steps in this direction. When war comes and manure flies, it will be near impossible to get out if you wait that long. You need to see the big picture, be aware of what’s happening around you and move quickly, Have your passport ready.

Here’s a discussion on city-data from folks musing over leaving this country and actual expatriates, and their destinations.

You have to know the rules of emigration and have everything in place beforehand. You need to know what it will take to get a visa and how long it will take. What job skills will your host country want? Do you have them? Well, get some. You need to know another language. Most other educated people who live in first world countries are fluent in another language. Once you travel a bit, you will be dismayed at how stupid Americans seem in comparison to many educated people in other nations and understand how someone as unintelligent as GW could be “elected” to office. Teaching English is a great skill. I taught English in Asia and made good money. It’s good to visit your bugout locale beforehand. Have a plan!

You will need cash, and lots of it. Start saving now. If I had enough cash, I’d consider buying an apartment on The World, a cruise ship, constantly on the move. Hopefully, they’d have sense to stay on the high seas out of the reach of manure flying. I think the apts start at a mil and a half though. But what a life!
