If you live it, you don’t need me to tell you the reality, but I will tell you this–in these economic times you have to be ready to survive without a job.
The jobless rate for young black men and women is 30.5 percent right now. That’s only what they tell us. If we count the ones who have given up, joined the underground economy or simply live with somebody who works, I’d say 50-75%. If white men had to start enduring the same, they’d be committing suicide, shooting up folks, crying, and rioting in the streets. The reverberations of the depression will only hit when it seriously affects the spoiled and bratty white folks–because they are the ones who will act up and throw tantrums. They aren’t used to it. Glenn Beck will be boohooing, kicking, and screaming and telling all his silly listeners to get out their guns.
The Washington Post ran an article telling all those other folks who have no clue. I supppose it is a Newsflash for those lucky devils. Whites get affirmative action all the time. They are used to that and get upset when they see Negroes with jobs, such as the ones at the airport. Any Negro they see with a job, they assume took it from the rightful job owner–somebody white. Don’t fret. Jesus will get them eventually.

“Black men were less likely to receive a call back or job offer than equally qualified white men,” said Devah Pager, a sociology professor at Princeton University, referring to her studies a few years ago of white and black male job applicants in their 20s in Milwaukee and New York. “Black men with a clean record fare no better than white men just released from prison.”
They can be drunks, have room temp IQs, just out of prison and stink while constantly farting and burping, but they will STILL get hired over anybody black, no matter how qualified the black person is. If there are one or two guvment affirmative action positions, and times are hard, those will be filled by a white woman first. Maybe a single black will grudgingly be hired, but that’s it. If you the second black to apply and you have a degree from Harvard, they STILL will hire the white guy who dropped out of high school before they hire you. It is a simple fact of life.
And guess who’s laid off first? It doesn’t matter your contribution or how hard you work. To most white people, albeit possibly on an unconscious level, it only matters that you’re black and the other guy (or chick) isn’t. It is unwise for black folks to forget race for an instant. Be grateful for what we do have BUT we always have to be ready for the worst because inevitably, that’s what we seem to get from the majority in this country.
You must be ready to lose your job and still survive. How are you going to do it?

Say it loud for the people in the cheap seats! You are so true but I know too many of us who do not think this is true. They really think jobs fall out the sky and I suspect they think I am just the queen of gloom and doom. Having lived through a few layoffs, while I am not happy that I earn less than what I should for someone in my field with a graduate degree and years of experience.
The upside is I know I can live on less and not feel too terribly upset…I admit I have my minutes when I wonder why don’t I have what Sally Sue does but I know it comes and it goes.
So I plan to live on less and look for ways to create income sans a regular JOB.

This is exactly almost what happened to me ten years ago. The staff of 15 were told that two positions would be cut, but the supervisor said she didn’t know how “they” would do it. She lied.
A Jewish woman staffer snuck into her office, dug through the files, and found the list of those slated for the axe. Instead of the names of the people, it was coded in numbers. She recognized her employee ID #, then showed me the list. I was the other one. She figured as much. The rest of the staff was white.
We quickly joined the union who saved our jobs since we had seniority over some of the other staff.

They continually do this and then have the NERVE to constanly bitch over affirmative action even when they work it out so THEY benefit more than blacks from that too.
They have it rigged that whites from poor areas get job preference now so they can hire them over minorities. White women always get the first affirmative action hires anyway. It’s only when they absolutely have to hire someone black that they do so.
My old boyfriend, a computer network consultant, the only black at his large company, says even though he’s buddy-buddy on the surface he can never forget who he is in their eyes because it always comes back around to slam him if he does.
We just have to be more careful and know we’re always, always first in line for the ax, no matter our quality of work.
And Becky will always get the job over LaShaniqua even though Becky weighs 300 pounds and stinks with no work experience and La Shaniqua only weighs 200 lbs, is clean and has five years work experience. That’s just the way it is.
